In the early 2000s, what was the 1-level open air mall was converted into a 2-level fully air-conditioned mall. Then expansions were made including the East Concourse and East Annex building where high-end fashion and lifestyle shops can be found, and Shopwise as well.

Connecting the East Concourse to the South Concourse is the Green Lane which surrounds the Atrium. With the glass-clad promenade which is lined with trees and plants built directly above the South Promenade, targeted to be turned into an upscale greenbelt corner. Also, connecting the mall to other areas of the complex such as the Limketkai Luxe Hotel and gateway Tower is the Limketkai Skywalk. Once the expansion is finished, more high-end shops, restaurants and additional two cinemas will be opened. Currently, a two-storey carpark building is being constructed fronting Robinsons Cagayan de Oro.

Top 5 Beautifully and Uniquely Designed Stores in Cagayan de Oro

They say that how a store is designed and arranged spells the difference between customers just breezing through and customers either buying on the spot or wanting to come back to buy. In Cagayan de Oro there are actually a few stores that can really attract the customer’s attention because of its unique and beautifully designed interiors, and take note, a few of these aren’t even you’re usual branded stores.

Bench

There’s something about the really large Bench stores in Limketkai Mall and Ayala Centrio Mall that has customers coming back frequently. In terms of modern designs and arrangements, the show windows are already attractions by showing all their local and foreign endorsers in gigantic picture posters, some scantily clothed, while displaying some signature products. The modern and trendy arrangement of everything in the store is so competent and organized that you can see almost everything firsthand and hardly need to call for an attendant’s help.

Human Nature

You can find them at the Sia Building at the corner of Arch. Hayes and Don A. Velez Streets. They’re considered as Cagayan de Oro’s first Mindanao-themed and concept store. It features indoor tree designs and Mindanao themes all around the store, a merry mix of the old and new since it is also housed in one of CDO’s oldest buildings and considered an historical heritage site.

Lifestyle House of Decors

Image Source | Facebook: Lifestyle House of Decors

Image Source | Facebook: Lifestyle House of Decors

This is just the place to cater to all your home decorating tastes. They have everything, and we mean everything, ranging from the smallest cute ashtrays and table figurines to large wall and figure decorations including dividers and cabinets. If you’re thinking of unique home decoration ideas or concepts this store is located at the Tan Building, at the corner of Pabayo and Gomez Streets. When you first enter the store what comes into mind is chaos since the place is filled from corner to corner and top to bottom with every conceivable home decoration you can think of. However, while browsing through the store, you finally get the picture that everything is “chaotically arranged” to resemble what a home would look like if fully decorated. You could spend hours looking through everything and still have a hard time deciding what to buy.

Payless Shoe Source

Of all the shoe stores you’ll enter, this one located at the Ayala Centrio Mall and at Limketkai Mall is uniquely arranged and organized like you would a warehouse. All shoes are arranged according to shoe size. All you need to do is to look for your shoe size and see what shoes are available in your size. There are different sections as well for male and female. The shoes are arranged like shoes stacked and organized in a warehouse, so you can easily see everything from top to bottom.

Gazebo Home Store

gazebo

You probably always passed this store along Don A. Velez Street at the corner of Gaerlan Street thinking it as a coffee shop. Well, it’s actually a gift shop and home décor shop where you can find unique items for virtually every holiday and season. You’ll find all sorts of pedestals, vintage clocks, birdcage decors, wedding bowls, creamware cake stands, teacups, botanical plate chargers, rare holiday ornaments, and other fancy stuff you won’t find at the malls. They even have rare Lemax figurines that are hard to find, layaway plans for ladies bags, and large items like dining table sets and fireplace accent screens. What makes this place unique is that it’s set up like a coffee shop and the inside reminds you of those quaint décor shops in Paris that you see in movies.

4 Pastry Shops with Unique Concepts in Cagayan de Oro

Pastry shops in Cagayan de Oro are sprouting like the proverbial mushrooms all over the city. It would seem that almost every nook and cranny of the city has some sort of pastry shop, from the really simple ones that are still designed like the old Chinese-owned bakeries (well, some of them have been around since the 1970’s) to the newer ones with unique conceptualized interiors. And it is the latter that we’ll be focusing on in this article. As much as possible we tried selecting some pastry shops that have really unique and cool concepts. Of course, with the hundreds of pastry shops around the city, we might have missed your favorite one, but give us credit for trying.

Chocolates and Creams

As their tagline, “the taste of dreams” suggest, as soon as you walk into the pastry café, you’ll find an area that’s made for the beach, complete with the inflatable inner tire tubing, a playhouse, and what almost looks like a tree house.

IMG_3263

You can order your pastry and drinks and literally sit and lie around and just muck around, talk, study, or fiddle with your gadgets.

IMG_3278

As the name implies, most of their pastries and sweets are either chocolaty or creamy in variety.

IMG_3322

Their pastry bestseller is their Sans Lava, a different sort of sans rival with a creamy chocolate filling inside. You can find this playhouse, or rather, pastry shop, at the corner of Don A. Velez and Gaerlan Streets.

Pane e Dolci

Image Source | Facebook: Pane e Dolci

Image Source | Facebook: Pane e Dolci

There are two things that make Pane e Dolci and Caffe Zibetto different from other pastry shops. First, they are the only “out of the way” pastry shop in the city because they’re located at 8th and 21st Streets in Nazareth, a virtual side street, away from busy malls and Divisoria.

Image Source | Facebook: Pane e Dolci

Image Source | Facebook: Pane e Dolci

And yet you’ll find people flocking to this place regularly because – and this brings us to the second concept – they offer pastries and other sweets you won’t find in the city, especially their famous Sylvannas that’s fast becoming a popular pastry and pasalubong fare in the city.

Image Source | Facebook: Pane e dolci

Image Source | Facebook: Pane e dolci

Pair their pastries with their Cafe Zibetto and your day is truly made.

civet

Their coffee is also the only one of its kind offered in the city. Perhaps this is why their store’s main concept is centered on their tagline, “take a break from the ordinary.”

Vjandep Pastel and Pastry Shop

Image Source | Facebook: Vjandep Cdo

Image Source | Facebook: Vjandep Cdo

Originally located along Tiano Bros. Street, this small pastel pastry pasalubong is now the only pastry shop in Cagayan de Oro with its own 3-storey building. This building is now Vjandep Pastry’s main headquarters that houses their production factory, pasalubong center, a café, and residence for transients. Their pastel bun pastry that now comes in different flavors is still a homemade delicacy favorite among Cagayanons and more are now sitting down daily in their café just to savor this delight, aside from the pastel being a pasalubong for travelers and tourists. They are located along C.M. Recto Highway in Bulua just after the crossroads going to the West Side Bus Terminal.

Sweet House Pastry School

Topping this list is the most unique concept anyone can ever come up with. Their sweets are to die for!

Image Source | Facebook: Sweet House Pastry School

The Sweet House Pastry School has already garnered numerous awards and medals from prominent culinary competitions such as the annual Kumbira Food Festival.

The interiors will also remind you of the sweet house in the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel. They are located at the corner of J.R. Borja and Tiano Bros. Streets.

Top 5 Budget Burgers in Cagayan de Oro City

$

0

Undeniably, Kagay-anons sure are food enthusiasts and do have a good taste when it comes to food. How can we say this? Well, the rising number of restaurants and food stalls are enough to prove this. Such food places offer different cuisines for people  to choose from. Meaning, whatever food you are craving at this very moment, pizza, burger, fries, teas, roasted chicken, and the likes, there will always be a place to satisfy you.

Speaking of burgers, Cagayan de Oro houses quite a great number of burger joints. Each burger joints has its best sellers. The burgers may be named as silly as they can be, or plainly, consisting a single, double or 5 layers of patties in a pair of buns. But not all of them are budget-friendly.

Know that there are burger places which offers affordable yet satisfying burgers. And we- About Cagayan de Oro- just recently searched for some of budget burgers in the city. Curious enough? Great! Here are our top 5 picks!

  1. Chino’s Deli

budget burgers in cdo

Image Source | Facebook: Chino’s Deli page

Founded in 1990, Chino’s Deli is a known meat processing company here in Cagayan de Oro, specializing in homemade Meat Deli products guaranteed clean and quality meat with no coloring, no extenders and no artificial flavorings.

Topping our list of top 5 budget burgers in the city is their Chori Burger which captured our hearts as we savor every bit of it. From the slightly oven toasted pair of buns, juicy and flavorful patty, crispy sweet potato chips, runny sunny-side up and the seasonings and sauce compliment each other making the whole burger one of a kind. You can have this tempting burger at P130 only.

Chino’s Deli is located at the 3rd Floor of Ayala Centrio Mall near the cinemas.

  1. The Old Blue Burgers

budget burgers in cdo

Image Source | Facebook: The Old Blue Burgers page

Located at Don A. Velez Corner J. Gaerlan Streets, where Bowties and Butter is situated, is The Old Blue Burgers.

A favorite hangout place among Kagay-anons, every so often, couples and students-alike , despite having a small area. What’s great with the place is that you can have either The Old Blue Burgers’ delicious burgers or the  sweet treats and drinks from Bowties and Butter, or have both!

Landed on the 2nd spot is their Classic Burger which can only cost you P110. It is consisted of a quarter pound patty which is perfectly seasoned layered with fresh lettuce, onions and tomatoes, then finished with their signature cream cheese and smoked barbecue sauces. And on the side, special hand cut fries breaded and fried to a crisp. What we liked about this burger is its overall taste, and them not using the usual slice of cheese but cream cheese was interesting . The sauces filled with much flavor complement with the delish and juicy patty.

They are open from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Monday until Thursday, then 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Friday until Sunday.

Their products are also available and being served at the main branch of Chingkeetea located at Pimentel Building, Hayes corner pabayo Streets still here in the city.

  1. 99Ranch Buffet + Pub

Image Source | Facebook: 99 Ranch CDO

Image Source | Facebook: 99 Ranch CDO

Ranked 3rd on our list of budget burgers is 99Ranch Buffet + Pub’s Grinabe Burger which is already inclusive of fries and a bottled drink for only P99.

Their Grinabe Burger is consisted of slightly grilled pair of buns, layered with their special patty sandwiched with cheese, lettuce and slices of tomatoes and onions. Then drizzled with special sauce and placed on the side hand cut potato fries.

We must give compliments to the patty of this such burger for it was perfectly cooked which brought out the best of its taste, and just a question, why do fries are great buddies for burgers?

99Ranch which started in June 18, 2015 is a buffet restaurant that can cater 1 to 200 persons. You can get there via riding a motorela from any point in Divisoria. You just have to ask the driver to bring you to 99Ranch, or say Tomas Saco 8th Street Nazareth.

  1. Chub’s Diner

budget burgers in cdo

Image Source | Facebook: Chub’s Diner page

Can be located along Corrales Avenue fronting the Xavier University gym is Chub’s Diner which started in October 5, 2011. And in our list, their Chub’s Burger made it to the 4th spot.

They say that they have the best burgers in the city which are grilled to perfection and are made of 100% pure and fresh premium beef, well, we couldn’t agree more! They may don’t have fries to accompany their burger, but it already can satisfy a craving alone.

For only P99, you can have a taste of the said burger.

  1. Angel’s Hamburger

budget burgers in cdo

Not a homegrown burger store, however, Kagay-anons liked the affordability of Angel’s Hamburger. For only P37, you can already have 2 Cheeseburgers. How’d you like that?

Definitely the most affordable and budget friendly among the 5, but when compared with the taste, though it didn’t disappoint, it can only ranked last. Nevertheless, we still consider it as one of the top budget burgers in the city.

They have an outlet along Corrales Avenue near Dolores Street.

Do you agree with our list? If yes, tell us which burger joint you are a frequent customer of. If not, suggest to us your favorite burger stores.

And just to let you know, we’ve created a video which presents our adventure towards seeking for these top 5 budget burgers in the city. Witness what made us think to have the mentioned burger joints above as our top picks.

7-Eleven Franchise for Less Than 1 Million Pesos! Would You Open a Store Now?

7-eleven cover

7-Eleven Franchise for less than a Million? That’s already possible now with the plans of PHILIPPINE Seven Corp. (PSC) to get more franchisees in the country, particularly in Mindanao.

Have you noticed the 7-Eleven stores that mushroomed in Cagayan de Oro City from last year? That is because the 7-Eleven chain has opened 65 stores in Mindanao in the second half of 2015 to boost its presence nationwide.

On Thursday, President and Chief Executive Officer Victor C. Paterno said, “We plan to end the year with a hundred, and I think a hundred stores in the next year and a half. I think Mindanao can probably take about 250 stores and then as incomes grow, it can take more and more, just like Metro Manila.”

There are currently 1,760 7-Eleven stores in the Philippines and with their expansion to Mindanao, the number could go dramatically huge!

“Each of the islands requires a warehouse and once you open a warehouse, you are forced to open a lot of stores. It’s a big bet and I think the bet now is paying off and we welcome the initiative of the new administration to grow the regions outside Metro Manila especially since we have stores there,” said Paterno.

“We want to increase the number of franchisees. Well, we are determined to grow the stores regardless if we find franchisees or not, ” he added.

PSC’s strategy to increase its already successful expansion is to execute the plan of requiring an investment lower than the usual P3.5 million. Paterno is finalizing the process of completing the franchise plan of “under P1 million.”

He said, “The idea is to be able to widen the pool of applicants. In the Philippines, the people with money don’t really want to work, the people willing to work don’t always have the money, so we have the money… We can attract people who are really willing to operate a store.”

PSC recorded a P472.3 million earnings in the first six months of this year. It is a 32% increase compared to the P356.5 million earnings of the same time frame last year.

“We are 32% up versus last year, so if the trend continues we can reach P1.3 billion, probably less,” Paterno said.

Shares in PSC closed P3 or 2.11% lower at P139 apiece on the Philippine Stock Exchange on Thursday.

Vives Music Lounge: A New Bar and Restaurant in Cdo Offering Huge VIP Videoke Rooms, Live Acoustic Music and Good Food

For those in constant search of a place where you can relax and sing away the night and stress, enjoy good food and drinks while with family, friends, or colleagues, there’s a new first-class music lounge in the city with all of the above mentioned.

IMG_7814

IMG_7815

It’s called Vives Music Lounge Bar and Resto and you’ll find them at the corner of Capistrano and Cruz Taal Streets, beside Fely’s Pawnshop. They are open daily from 5:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

How it all started

Vives Music Lounge Bar and Resto only just recently opened last July 1, 2016. Though both business partners had already decided to open up a business, it was the type of business to open that had them stumped at first. Finally, they stuck on the idea of opening a videoke music bar that would serve restaurant food as well since they observed that Kagay-anons loved to sing and eat.

13754702_10208924456602790_8397839816741435943_n

The name Vives actually went through a long process of trying to come out with the right name that would ring on everyone’s mind. After a series of trials and failures, the owners stuck on the name “Vives.” The sign logo was designed by the owner’s son, a sign to indicate that not only is it a videoke bar but also a watering hole.

IMG_7752

The pains and struggles of a startup business were often felt during the construction period. In one instance, the bar area was painted 4 times because the first three paint colors clashed negatively against the glass and shelf backdrop frames and liquor bottles. The walls, bar, and scaffolding are also noticeably filled with decorative steel industrial pipes that add to the beauty of the place.

13690607_10208924455842771_1820067201081320563_n

These are mostly leftover steel pipes are the signature interior décors of the place. The general atmosphere of the place is that of a first class bar and videoke music lounge.

IMG_7791

The lighting is also impressive as it looks like wine bottles hanging from the ceiling.

The Vives experience

The ground floor is the common videoke, bar, and restaurant area. While the customers can sing away the night on the ground floor while the microphone is passed around, a live acoustic band is also around nightly to entertain customers that have come only for the food and drinks.

For those who want to sing their hearts out or hold videoke parties and other celebrations, guests can make use of the videoke rooms upstairs.

The videoke rooms can fit 4 persons, 8 persons, and 12 persons, respectively. These are the rooms with the hourly rates. There are a total of 6 videoke rooms.

Food and Drinks

The food served is comparable and competitive to restaurants around the city. They serve fried chicken meals, Buffalo wings, pork and inihaw meals, soup dishes like Tinolang manok and Bulalo, and the usual pulutan dishes.

Vives is hoping it can target the mostly younger spectrum of customers as well as young professionals, families, and “barkada” groups that are looking for a place to crash out, stress out, and sing away the night. In all honesty, it is also trying to target the older clientele who are always in search of more affordable drinking holes before moving on to other bars. In the future they are planning to open during lunchtime to serve a wider choice of foods on the menu. Hopefully, they will have some promos and packages for the coming Fiesta month in August as well as for the coming “ber” months.

Not everyone can go to high end food restaurants; in fact even the rich and elite don’t even eat at high end restaurants every day. In truth, anyone in the economic spectrum regardless of status will at one point or another look seek out affordable food with a high-end value. Perhaps this is also the reason why all forms of people, rich or not-so-rich, will still eat at fast food joints like Jollibee and McDonalds. But in this article, we omitted these two eateries in favor of truly Cagayanon-owned food places that really give great value for money.

Cecil’s Snack Inn and Bakeshop

Probably one of the oldest eating places that first opened in front of Xavier University in the 1970’s. Now they have 2 branches at the corner of Tirso Neri and Pabayo Streets in Divisoria and at the corner of Corrales Avenue and J.R. Borja Street. They’ve always been known for their delectable cakes, pastries, egg pie, and éclairs, but also for their value meals, rice meals, spaghetti, and pancit palabok.

Slers Ham and Café

Surprisingly, few Cagayanons realize that Slers Café at the corner of Don A. Velez and Del Pilar Streets, another at the ground floor of the Gaisano City Mall, and one at the corner of Don A. Velez and Yacapin Streets serves up really delicious sandwiches, pandesal jamon combinations, rice meals, and truly delicious viands for meals. The meat in their menu is taken from their signature ham and meat products, including their scrumptious crispy pata.

Barkadahan Grill

They are known for their very affordable and truly Pinoy tasting dishes that are good for lunches and dinners for the family, friends, or colleagues, and cooked as if your very own mother was in the kitchen. Ever since the first Barkadahan opened in Divisoria in 2005 (which burned in a fire caused by a gay dressmaker on the 2nd floor), Cagayanons thought that this restaurant was from out of town. Noel and Aileen Martinez are Cagayanons who love food so much they decided to make it a family business. Today, the original restaurant is still in Divisoria (rebuilt after the fire) and with 2 additional branches at the Ayala Centrio Mall and Primavera in Uptown, Carmen.

Chub’s Diner

A small mom-and-pop-neighborhood-diner nestled between buildings along Corrales Avenue in front of the Xavier University gymnasium. They’ve been around since 2012 because not only do they serve really large meal servings, all their meals and dishes are surprisingly affordable. Really great value because of the large servings. They have a steady flow of customers all day long.

Biker’s Grill

This cozy restaurant serves up deliciously cooked varieties of beef, pork, chicken, and seafoods in a variety of budget meals. These affordable budget meals come in three categories: Biker’s Meal (sometimes called student meals), medium budget meals (or Best Sellers), and the high end budget meals or Unli Rice Specials. All budget meals are inclusive of iced tea. They also serve Bulalo, mango shake, and corn berry shake. You can find them on the ground floor of the Consortium Building along Corrales Extension, beside the parking lot of Gaisano City Mall.

Butcher’s Best

Now, who doesn’t know about the famous Butcher’s, a Cagayanon favorite especially with students and yuppies since the late 1980’s. Their affordable barbecue dishes, garlic rice, and sisig dishes have always been the fare for quick lunches or relaxing group or family dinners. Their main branch is still at Arch. Hayes Street corner Corrales Avenue.
